Goals for 2014

A Goal isn't a goal until you write it down and make it official. I'm pretty sure my blog is private and I don't have any followers, so this is my space to write down what I plan to do and not do and hopefully get DONE in 2014. If someone is looking at my blog let me know, so I can block you. haha. jk. no really.
1. Think before I speak. Only say positive things about other people, no matter who they are. Be nice. Never gossip.

2. Do something creative every day. I want to work up to creating a piece of art, be it a drawing or painting, calligraphy, SOMETHING! every single day. It may only be a creative meal somedays, or a blog entry, or a photograph. That's ok. No beating myself up. I would like to accomplish a good, hangable painting a month though. Oh, and use a sketchbook. How many empty sketchbooks do I have? Too many. It's time to put aside fear and procrastination and be the artist that I want to be and know that I am. I AM!

3. Be okay with the fact that I'm not a morning person, that I am actually grumpy and pessimistic before 9:00 am. It's OKAY. Life will force me to get up by 7:00, but when life doesn't force me to get up and I lay in bed until 9:00 feeling like a grouch, IT IS OKAY. I will get up, take a shower, feel better, eat and have a productive day and a night-owl night.

4. Be a nicer, happier, huggier, kissier wife. The end.

5. Do not spend more than we have.

6. Read my scriptures and pray earnestly every day. I need the Spirit to guide me in my life every single day, every single minute.

Okay, that's all. I feel good about writing it down. Now live life to its fullest. No regrets.

Jack's run in with fire

On February 23, almost a month ago, Jack had a scary brush with fire. No not a brush fire. A close call, a scary moment, a fire ball in his face, to be more accurate. I had picked Walker and Jack up early from school because they both didn't have a sixth period that day. The three of us came home, Jack went out to tinker around in the garage. He sits at this work area and works out his boredom. Well, as you can see from the picture below, there was an empty 5 gallon gas tank right by his feet that day. I had taken Dillon gas the week before when his car had run out on the road, and had left the gas can there. It was missing the cap so I had put a plastic bag with a rubber band around it to seal the opening. There was no gas left in it, or so I thought, and Jack had removed the bag a day or two before to check for gas to put in something or other, and he had left the bag off. On that fateful Thursday, he sat down in the chair, was daydreaming, picked up a lighter to flick it in all of his boredom, and because the tank was directly below him, we've deduced that there were fumes in the air that ignited with the lighter. He swears up and down that he didn't go, "hmm, gas + lighter, let's see what happens?" and I believe him. All he remembers is flicking the lighter and feeling his face on fire and feeling his hair burn. Walker and I heard this loud yell and Jack ran in the house yelling that he was on fire and patting his burnt hair. I immediately put his head under the sink and ran cold water on his head and pulled out clumps of burnt hair. It smelled seriously bad. His face looked ok so I sent him to take a shower to get the black out of his hair and see what was left. At that point, I thought he had only lost hair. I went to check on him in the shower and when he poked his face out, he said it was starting to hurt really bad, his eyes were super red and his skin was turning very red. At that point, I knew we needed to go to the ER. I made a bag of ice to put on his face and we quickly left for the San Clemente Emergency Room. As we were driving there and I could tell the pain was worsening, I started to get worried that is was worse than I originally thought. His eyebrows and eyelashes were gone and his skin was getting pretty red. When we got to the ER, they got us in pretty quickly, and were most concerned whether he had inhaled any of the fire. They were pretty sure that his burns were 1st degree, like a bad sunburn, so that was reassuring, but they had to keep him there for observation because if he had inhaled any of the fire or gas fumes, his airway could be damaged and his breathing could become affected. Jack was in a lot of pain so they gave his some good pain killers and eventually wrapped his face in a saline soaked gauze mummy wrap. They decided he needed to go to the burn unit in Santa Ana, via ambulance, to which I refused the ambulance part, signed paperwork and took him there myself. By the time we got to the burn unit, with Jack all mummified, it was 5 hours after the accident happened. When they checked him out at the burn unit, they took off his bandages and he looked SO much better. Saline solution must be the cure for 1st degree burns. He felt 100 times better after the mummy wrap came off. They said he was a lucky boy and sent us on our way. It was a scary day, but ended with complete relief that all he had lost were his eyebrows, eyelashes and quite a bit of hair off his head. He cute face was going to be fine and we are pretty sure he won't be a future pyromanic.

Dillon and Chelsea

On February 5, Dillon proposed to Chelsea. It was a very exciting day. Instead of writing about it again, as I have written it down A LOT, I will post the excerpt from a letter I wrote to Tanner about it.

"So this is a big day for DIllon. He's going to pop the big question to Chelsea today. HUGE DAY. He hasn't gotten the ring made yet, although he found the design he loves and is going to have it made in LA. In the meantime, he's using Chelsea's mom's first wedding ring as a placeholder. Chelsea's mom, Marilyn, gave it to him to use which I thought was really sweet of her. It's really pretty. The plan is that Walker called Chelsea and said he wants to do a photo shoot of them today (he does that a lot now with people and is REALLY good), anyways, he told her he is building a website for his business and needs some couple shots so she thinks they are just doing a photo shoot to that cool Rios street in San Juan Capistrano. So they'll be there shooting cute pictures when DIllon will fall to one knee and propose while Walker is snapping pictures of the whole event. I hope it works out like he wants it to!
....later
After church Walker, Dillon and Chelsea went to San Juan for pictures. Instead of the Los Rios street they went to this cool field/meadow off Junipero Serra and the lighting was insane. They took lots of cute pictures and poses and then chelsea said, "now what should we do?" and Dillon reaches in his pocket and gets on one knee and proposes. Chelsea was so caught totally by surprise and cried. She of course said yes. Walker took amazing pictures!"

It's been an wonderful thing seeing my boy fall in love and make the commitment to spend the rest of his life with Chelsea. We love her a lot and feel like she is already part of the family. They are in the middle of wedding planning now and have set the date for July 21, only 3 days after Tanner gets home. It's going to be a fun summer!

Winter Formal 2012

Walker had asked me a few weeks before winter formal if we could host the dinner at our house. I was a little panic stricken at first, thinking about cooking for 16 kids and coming up with a cool setting in the backyard, dazzling enough to make it winter-formal worthy. Then, after talking to Walker about his "vision", knowing that if anyone, HE could help me pull it off, and talking to fellow moms about divi-ing up the food and catering the main dish, I realized it would actually be a lot of fun. The moms met a couple of weeks before, we made assignments and prayed for a clear night with no rain. One of my wonderful friends, Kathy, had a lot of fun decorations left from her daughter's wedding last December, so we borrowed her turquoise and white vases, mason jars, tons of candles and the other moms pitched in the chairs, tables, sheets, dishes and white christmas lights. On the day of winter formal, four parents and I started stringing lights, covering two pop up tents with white bed sheets that were safety pinned together and setting the table. Walker came in time for the finishing touches. It took us about six hours to set up, and luckily we started two hours before we had originally planned or we wouldn't have made it, we were putting on the final touches until the moment the doorbell started ringing. The only glitch came when, right as the guests were arriving, I went to turn on the switch to turn on all the lights and not one light came on. Luckily, my knight in shining armor husband had just walked in, put on his electrician hat, and saved the evening. The kids arrived, parents came to take pictures and the rest you can see in the photos. It was a huge success. The kids had a blast, the parents had fun hanging out, the food was delicious, Louis Armstrong played in the background, and the tent in the back yard felt like a movie set. It was truly a perfect night.
